According to the United Nations, “A volunteer is a young person or adult who, due to his/her personal interest and civic spirit, dedicates part of his/her time, to several forms of activities, social well-being or other fields without being paid for it”.
Therefore, voluntary work means seeking personal satisfaction, rather than a material reward, by devoting one’s solidarity to a cause. Being a volunteer means following an urge and being available, but it also means being responsible and making a commitment.
Voluntary work, carried out in a professional fashion, may become an agent of change in society.
There is no perfect society, but the will to contribute to minimize those imperfections may be the first step to help create a better world.
