Children and Young People at Risk
They are all the children that due to their past, may show criminal behaviour, but also those children whose family environment is subject to economic factors, as well as some imbalances, exposing the child to ill-treatment, negligence and sexual abuse, among others. According to the Portuguese Law nº 147/99 (Children and young people in danger protection law), article 3º, nº 2, the child or young person is considered to be in danger when: a) He/She is abandoned or relies on himself/herself for a living; b) Suffers from physical or psychological ill-treatment, or is the victim of sexual abuse; c) Does not receive the care or affection adequate to his/her age and personal situation; d) Is forced to do excessive or inadequate activities or work for his/her age, dignity and personal situation or that are harmful to his/her education or progress; e) Is directly or indirectly subject to behaviour which might seriously affect his/her safety or his/her emotional balance; f) Adopts attitudes or is involved in activities or habits which might seriously affect his/her health, safety, training, education or progress, at the absence of an adequate response from his/her parents, legal representative or guardian, which will actually stop this behaviour or actions. The Novo Futuro Association welcomes and takes care of these children, by cultivating affectionate and intellectual abilities which will enable them to assume professional responsibilities in society and build a happy home in the future.
